Heritage & Origin

A Crown Born of Ingenuity

The Gèlè is among the most remarkable textile inventions in the history of African fashion — a headwrap art form developed, refined, and elevated by Yorùbá womenacross centuries. More than adornment, it is architecture: draped, folded, and sculpted into statements of status, occasion, and feminine power.

From its origins in the weaving traditions of Yorùbáland, the Gèlè spread across borders, taking root in West Africa, each culture adding its own vocabulary of colour and form. Today it remains a living art — worn at naming ceremonies, weddings, festivals, runways, and royal courts.

The Gèlè Festival exists to celebrate this invention — its makers, its masters, and its future — in the cultural heartland of Lagos.
